PICATINNY ARSENAL, NJ — Brig. Gen. Jonathan A. Maddux, Picatinny Senior Commander and PEO Ammunition, fires the inaugural shot at Picatinny Arsenal’s new small arms range on Dec. 16. Maddux is firing the Lightweight Small Arms Technology Light Machine Gun (LMG), which is currently in the technology base by the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny. With a basic load of 1,000 rounds, the LMG and its cased telescoped ammunition is 20.4 pounds lighter than a traditional M249 Squad Automatic Weapon with the same amount of standard, brass-cased ammo.

RED DOT SIGHTS

Red dot sights are first place you should look for optics. They have the ultimate flexibility in shooting position. Scopes are great but you have to be very disciplined in your body position and cheek weld for them to work. Every scope has an eye box that you have to stay inside to be able to see through the scope. Certain shooting positions like weakside transition around barriers, rollover prone, etc. make it very hard to see through a regular scope. On most red dots as long as you can see through the red dot you should be able to pick up the red dot or reticle and get hits on your intended target. When Choosing a red dot you can choose what height you want the red dot to be. Absolute co-witness will mean that the backup iron sights will co-witness with the red dot right in the middle, a lower 1/3 co-witness means that the you can see the iron sights co-witnessed with the red dot on the bottom 1/3 of the available glass.

Eotech EXPS 2-0 - this was the first red dot I bought. If you are going to get an Eotech get an EXPS, they fixed anything that was wrong with the older designs, transverse mounted batteries that don’t shake loose under recoil, and they moved the controls to the side which is needed if your going to run a magnifier, or night vision behind your red dot. This was a great optic the good thing about Eotechs is they have large square viewing window that disappears easily and gives you a great sight picture. I later on bought the G.33 FTS 3x magnifier. Pretty nice magnifier, the flip to side mount is kind of lame. Built by A.R.M.S. This setup ends up being really bulky and heavy. 11.2oz for the Eotech, and 12.8 oz. for the 3x Magnifer and mount. It’s damn near 1.5 lbs. I ended up selling both of these and bought a used ACOG for $700.

AIMPOINT PRO - Aimpoint is the other big name in red dot sights. They have a great thing going for them and that is BATTERY LIFE. Most Aimpoints have a 3-7 year battery life depending on the model. They have a simple single dot reticle. They are extremely durable and tough. One of the drawbacks about Aimpoints is most of the models do not come with a mount like the Eotech but the Aimpoint PRO includes a mount in it’s package for a reasonable price. 11.6 oz.

Variable Power Scopes

These are scopes which have a variable magnification range typically from 1-4x or 3-9x are the sizes you would be looking at for carbine. There are alot of different scopes out there with different reticles in MILRADIANS or MINUTE OF ANGLE, as well as bullet drop reticles for common projectiles (62 gr. 5.56). There are also different types of illuminated reticles and non-illuminated reticles. Some have radioactive tritium inserts, other fiberoptic illumination, while most commonly they have battery powered illumination.

Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 - I ran this scope on my Recce rifle for a while. The 1x is great and functions almost as good as a red dot. IT has a similar reticle to an Eotech in a way and worked well like that. The 4x was okay. The reticle is so small counting the mil marks was almost impossible. The scope did have a nice medium long eye relief of 4”. This means your eye is intended to be 4” from the rear of the scope. 16.2 oz. Larue spr 1.5 mount 6.8 oz. total weight 22.10 oz.

Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC - this was a relatively cheap scope made for rimfire weapons that I put on my Ruger 10-22. It has a non-illuminated reticle but It still works in day or night. I found the reticle at night appears a rust red color, while in the daytime it is black. It has a bullet drop reticle that is calibrated for .22 lr with markings for 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 yards. This scope has 3.9” of eye relief which makes it quite comfortable, but you do need to maintain a proper cheek weld. I got this scope because I wanted a 9x so that I could see my .22lr hits without switching to a spotting scope. It does the trick. I actually do zoom out to 3x and 4x quite often though because sometimes 9x makes it hard to track moving targets. This scope restored my faith in non-illuminated reticles for most plinking and hunting applications you do not need an illuminated reticle. 13.7 oz

ACOGs

These are a great scope option. The big advantage to ACOG’s is they use a prism which allows the scope to be much more compact and rugged than typical scopes. I don’t know the real name for this type of scope but other non-acogs that fit this category like the trilux suit, and the russian PO 3.5x21P

Trijicon TA31F - this is one of the more popular ACOG models. 4x32 magnification. The quality of glass is excellent I can see a .22 hole in paper at 100 yards with the ACOG. These are great scopes because they do not require any battery for the illumination. The red strip along the top of the scope is a fiberoptic strand that provides auto-adjusting illumination to the reticle. They are also fitted with radioactive tritium inserts which illuminate the reticle at night. I really like the reticle on the TA31 which is the chevron. The tip of the chevron is zeroed to 100 yards, the inside is 200, and the base is 300. then after that there are lines for 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 yards. The lines are sized to be the equivalent to the width of a human chest at that distance. This way you can range the distance of the target using the reticle and have the appropriate bullet drop for that distance. The other great thing about the ACOG is if you can learn the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC) and shoot with both eyes open it really works. You get the best of both worlds of a red dot and a magnified optic, your brain makes the switch instantly. I have tried tracking fast moving rabbits using the BAC technique and it actually works really well. One of the negatives with the ACOG is the very short eye relief. 1.5” does not leave alot of room for shooters with longer arms. You have to keep your nose almost touching the charging handle to be able to see properly out of an ACOG. This can be a problem with smaller shooters stuck with longer stocks like the A2 stock on an M16A2. The big drawback to ACOG’s is the price, but they are worth money. I would recommend buying a 2nd hand unit you can save around 50%. They are military grade optics and they will last. 14.7 oz.

This is the closest I could get to a picture. They use a VLTOR M5 buffer tube and buttstock, and a VLTOR VIS monolithic upper but they should be in tan color. This is meant as an improvement ment to be done at the ARMORER level, the rifles will maintain their barrels, front sight posts, lower recievers, fire control groups, bolt carrier groups, etc.
